Bible Department Chapel

Chapel today was beautiful. It is rare that I can use that adjective (which I treasure and try not to overuse); the last time it was applicable was probably when Dr. Fortner spoke on lament. But today was inspiring.

There were three men seated in front of the entire Bible department, Jimmy Allen, Dr. Ken Neller, and Danny Matthews. Scott Adair asked them questions pertaining to their college experiences, and it was fascinating to get a look back at these great men before they became so.

Danny Matthews had studied under Neller, who in turn had studied under Jimmy Allen. And Danny had roomed with another faculty member, Tim Westbrook, who has never ceased to impress me with his care for others. And Neller mentioned being in school with Dr. Stockstill, with whom he had worked in Lexington, KY for several years. The way they spoke, they obviously held such respect for each other and truly loved as brothers.

It made me think of where I will be in thirty years. Will I have been faithful? Will I have done good things for my good God? Will I have created any work of beauty, be it song or photograph or poem or book, in keeping with my title of Son of the Creator? Will I have helped my family? Will I have failed? Will I have been a good influence on anyone?

Will I finally be a good man?

Oh, it is scary to think of what is not yet.

My Last Semester

Sorry for not posting on here in so long. I know all three of you have been simply distraught.

So, let's catch up.

It's my last semester here at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. I am looking forward to leaving. This summer I am going back to Grand Junction, Colorado to work with my church there, and then after that I will go to Spain if I am accepted into an internship program. All still "I-hopes" at this point, because it is the future.

One time my friend got mad at me for not promising that I would call her the next day. I refused to promise on basis of the fact that I might die before the next day, my phone might self-destruct, etc. You know? You don't know what's gonna happen! But my friend got mad that I wouldn't promise something in the future. This story becomes less ridiculous when you learn that my friend is a girl.

But I pretty much just told you what you already knew.

Right now it seems like everything is merely potential. There is no actual. There isn't much for me right here and right now. I feel I've outgrown this place and want to move on. But the future is so uncertain. Jobs, apartments, bills, love, friends, insurance, and lots and lots and lots of rice. My staple food.

So now we are all caught up. Good for you! That didn't take very long at all!

Now let's just hope the semester follows suit.

Taking Steps Forward

I just emailed a lady from Teach Kentucky, which is a lovely program which lets people teach high school courses while TAKING courses toward getting their Master's Degree. It's a busy two-year program, but it would take me home.

I miss home.

I am nervous, because the program usually works in concert with graduates of VERY prestigious universities, like Harvard and Yale. I chose a lady from the University of Louisville to write my questions to, not the people listed from Yale. Although I am confident that my grammar and mechanics were impressively pristine, I worried that they would look down on me for going to school in Arkansas. Heck, I do.

I did not say "heck" in my email.

What I want: to be accepted in the program, to go home, to teach, and to serve. Oh, I can't think of anything I want to do with my life more. I can't think of a better use of this life I've been given.

I can't think of much that frightens me more than this not working out.
